The Story In A Friend's Dream

Gerald was asked by Ann, a friend of his, for help. She was concerned about her brother Jim and wanted Gerald to talk with him. Gerald enthusiastically agreed to help.

But time passed and Gerald was involved in other things. Not that he didn't think of Jim frequently, it just seemed like there was always something else to do.

One night after a particularly rough day Gerald climbed into bed exhausted. He's thankful that the day is over and he can finally rest. Sleep comes easily and quickly. Then out of the twilight of restful sleep comes a dream:

In the dream Gerald is driving a car, an old car. It's night and very dark. The car belongs to Ann and he is driving it somewhere for her. As he travels, the road narrows and the pavement disappears. Soon road becomes a single lane, then simply two ruts in the dirt. There are tall trees on each side very close to the road, their branches hanging low, almost touching the car.

Gerald notices that the lights are slowly beginning to dim. Changing from a bright white light to a yellowish red, and getting dimmer and dimmer as he goes down the road. He becomes concerned that he will not make it to his destination. The lights are so dim now that they do not illuminate the road. He has to slow the car to a creep, the automatic transmission down shifts to low gear.

Finally, he stops. With the engine still running he gets out and walks to the front of the car. Very deep in the head light he can see a tiny speck of orange light, just a barely perceptible glimmer. He watches curiously as it expires completely.

Gerald awakes refreshed the next morning to face a new day. He remembers the dream on his drive to the airport. Suddenly the meaning becomes clear. On the plane he searches for pen and paper. The letter to Jim flows effortlessly from the pen no errors, no cross outs, and no re editing. That's unusual for Gerald. He prays that he is not too late in telling Jim what God has done in his life and what HE can do for him.
